Special Ottawa Screening of a New Feature-Length Documentary About Burma -- How Can a Boy

Ottawa's Kublacom Pictures is pleased to announce a special Ottawa screening of its new feature-length documentary film, How Can a Boy, on Friday, January 13th, 7:00pm at the National Archives Auditorium, 395 Wellington Street.

Tickets are $5.00, available at 6:00pm at the door only. First come first served. Proceeds from the screening will be donated to the Karen Community of Ottawa. Q & A session will follow the screening with Nimrod Andrew and the Director/Producers.

A film by two Ottawa filmmakers, How Can a Boy tells the story of Ottawa resident Nimrod Andrew, who became a refugee at the age of ten at the hands of the Burmese military and who fought back, turning hardship into hope and displacement into opportunity.

Forced to flee from his small village without his parents when the Burmese military attacked, Nimrod Andrew became stateless and faced an uncertain future in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burmese border. Overcoming tremendous odds, through hard work and ingenuity, Nimrod obtained a high school certificate and his search for safety and a better future brought him to Canada. Confronting the losses in his life and deeply affected by his childhood experiences, Nimrod has now taken on a great challenge, helping his fellow refugees to survive and find happiness in Ottawa. And telling Canadians the truth about Burma.

This 77-minute documentary chronicles the decades-old struggle by the Karen people and other ethnic minority groups in Burma for their land, livelihood and survival, against a brutal military regime bent on wiping them off the map. Against the horrors of human rights abuses and a humanitarian crisis of enormous proportions we follow the story of this remarkable young man in his quest to triumph over loss.

Nimrod Andrew, now a Canadian citizen, lives in Ottawa with his spouse Win and their two young children. He works full-time as a settlement officer for OCISO - Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization, helping newly-arrived immigrants and refugees to settle in Ottawa. Nimrod is very active in the Karen community of Ottawa organizing community-building events such as the Karen New Year celebration. He travels regularly to the refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border to assist and monitor the situation of refugees and to help build linkages with Canadian churches and non-governmental organizations.

Kublacom Pictures is an Ottawa-based company that produces documentaries for television and non-governmental clients. Previous films include One of the Last and This is My Witness. How Can a Boy is Kublacom's second film about Burma, directed by Ed Kucerak and produced by Ed Kucerak and Jane Gurr.

Veteran filmmaker and SAW Video staff alumnus Tony Asimakopoulos will offer a master class in autobiographical documentary production, drawing from examples from his new feature film Fortunate Son. He will discuss everything he did wrong, and how you can try to avoid it… as well as the various benefits of going straight to the core of your preoccupations as a human being and an artist: your family of origin.

Tony Asimakopoulos is a director currently based in Montreal, where he recently completed his first documentary feature, Fortunate Son, produced by EyeSteelFilm. Fortunate Son will be screened Nov. 3rd, 7pm at the Library and Archives Canada: 395 Wellington. Tony studied film at Concordia University and made the award-winning shorts Jimmy Fingers (1991) and Mama’s Boy (1992). After recovering from a severe drug problem, he worked to develop a groundbreaking video-apprenticeship program for youth-at-risk at SAW Video.

DOC Ottawa-Gatineau presents: Interactive Documentary Workshop

A day with Paul Shoebridge, co-creator of the multi-award winning web documentary, Welcome to Pine Point, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Paul will take you through the steps that went into building their internationally acclaimed piece – including the challenges, pitfalls, techniques and creative solutions that were required to make it all work. Questions encouraged.

Welcome to Pine Point was the NFB's first ever web documentary that did not have a film attached, which meant that the story was entirely conceived for the uniquely challenging environment of the interactive world.

A significant portion of the workshop will be devoted to brainstorming several participants' projects. This will include an assessment of the suitability of the project, solutions to overall structure, as well as unique ways to create and handle documentary material. Participants are asked to submit in advance a brief outline of an existing or imagined pitch for consideration for the session. The focus will be on creating projects specifically for the web, not in turning existing film-based projects into web-based projects, or creating promotional sites for existing films.

Paul Shoebridge, co-principal at The Goggles Media Group, is an award-winning creator, having produced magazines (most notably, Adbusters), books, television spots, and major international advocacy campaigns, including TV Turnoff, Buy Nothing Day, and the Blackspot Sneaker, which was featured as one of the NY Times ‘Best Ideas’.

He most recently created the internationally acclaimed interactive documentary Welcome to Pine Point with the NFB and is in production on an interactive project about the death of print. Winner of two Webby Awards amongst others, Pine Point has been screened at numerous festivals, including IDFA, Sheffield, DOXA and Rooftop Film Festival.

Come join DOC Ottawa-Gatineau members Ed Kucerak and Jane Gurr for an exclusive screening of This is my Witness, their new film on the women of Burma.

The film follows the journey and personal transformation of two women who go to New York to tell their stories at the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women of Burma. Their stories illustrate the brutality of the military regime in Burma. The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ottawa Citizen’s Kate Heartfield and featuring Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams. Sheila Htoo, who participated in the Tribunal will also be on the panel—along with Nisha Toomey from Canadian Friends of Burma.

Ottawa creative studio, 27Forty is very proud to announce that the documentary "17 Days" will be premiering across the nation on all the CTV affiliates including TSN on Saturday Feb. 26, 2011 at 8pm EST.

CTV Olympic Consortium Producer/Director Don Young aligned with 27Forty to produce a one hour documentary that exposes the behind-the-scenes events of the consortium and reveals dramatic moments that played out during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

"It has been a year long project with many different editorial directions and story options to deal with. We had an over abundance of dramatic story lines and footage which believe or not, makes story telling even harder... ultimately, we had to cut out some amazing scenes to fit the TV run time " says Dave Bigelow, Creative Director and Editor.

Just as the Olympians experienced moments of high drama and pressure, so too did the team at Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, who brought the Games to Canadians and delivered the athletes’ stories.

It is not known in the general public what these storytellers do and why. This documentary turns the camera’s unblinking eye on the professional choices made by the people at the Consortium who were privileged to tell present and future generations the historic story of the ‘seventeen days’ in February when Canada hosted the world for the 2010 Winter Games.

(October 8^th, 2010 – Ottawa, Canada) Ottawa-based Mountain Road Productions in association with Bossy Jossy Productions and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) presents the premiere of Sheltered an original series that follows Ojibway carpenter Derek Marsden, as he travels the world to learn the ancient home building techniques of the world's Indigenous cultures. The first leg of his journey takes him to locations in Africa and Central and South America where he lives and works with people who have maintained their traditional lifestyles. This 4-part, half-hour documentary series premieres Monday,October 18 at 8 p.m. on APTN West and APTN North; and Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m. on APTN East and APTN HD.

In each episode, Derek visits an indigenous community where he stays in a structure similar to the one he is working on, spending time with a family and seeing how the shelter functions and shapes the lives of its occupants. He’ll join them at meals, in games and learn about their culture at the same time that he experiences what it is like to build a home in a completely different way.

In the first episode, Peru: The Journey Begins…, Derek takes off on his journey, and his first stop is Lake Titicaca, Peru where he meets the Uros people. They live on islands made of reeds and Derek is taught how to build a traditional home, from harvesting the reeds by boat to sewing reed mats for the roof.

In episode 2, Costa Rica: Work Work – Don’t be Lazy!, Derek travels to Costa Rica where the Bri Bri people build their homes using bamboo and vine. In this dense rain forest setting, he becomes close friends with a community elder as they build a traditional Bri Bri shelter together.

Digi60 Film Festival is back for 2010!

After a one-year break, Digi60, Ottawa’s original Digital Film Festival, returns with a few new twists for 2010 and it promises to be bigger than ever. DIGI60 challenges Ottawa-area filmmakers to write and shoot a short digital film in 30 days. But there’s just one “catch”… and it changes every Festival. All filmmakers are all given the same set of parameters for their films and they need to use their imaginations and creativity to base their films around this “catch”. Previous catches have included the first and last lines of the film, specific subject matter, and specific locations. How the filmmaker incorporates the “catch” into their film is entirely up to them.

There will be three categories for interested filmmakers:

1. The Super Eight:
Eight experienced producers have been invited to compete and all eight of these entries will be shown at the Gala.

2. Open:
Open to anyone from the general public interested in submitting a film. A jury of industry experts will select two entries from this group to be screened at the Gala.

3. Student Filmmakers:
Open to university or college students who want to get their feet wet in a film festival. The jury will choose two of the submitted student projects to have their debut at the Gala.

This year’s “catch” will be revealed on Friday, September 17, 2010.

The deadline for finished films is Monday, October 18, 2010.

The Digi60 Film Festival Gala Screening for top films in each category is Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the Richcraft Theatre at the Shenkman Arts Centre, Orleans. Tickets will be available to purchase soon.

Every single video produced will be presented on the Digi60 website.

SAW Video Association (Ottawa) seeks a full-time Technical Coordinator (Post-production). He/she will work with the Technical Coordinator (Production) to provide post-production support to SAW Video members. This is a permanent full-time (37.5 hours per week) position.

Established in 1981, SAW Video is Eastern Ontario’s largest and oldest media art production centre. SAW Video provides a range of services to artists including affordable access to video production equipment and post-production facilities, workshops, grant programs, as well as media art screenings and exhibitions.

Starting wage: $16 per hour with health/dental benefits

The Technical Coordinator (Post-production) will:

§ Oversee all aspects of SAW Video’s post-production equipment and facilities, including bookings; equipment purchases, maintenance and upkeep;

§ Provide technical support for members in edit suites;

§ Repair and maintain post-production equipment and ensure that post-production suites are well-maintained;

§ Assist Technical Coordinator (Production) as required;

§ Work with the Director and Technical Coordinator (Production) to set annual budgets for equipment purchase and maintenance;

§ Assist in the writing of grants, as well as preparing reports on and requests for equipment purchases.

§ Oversee the maintenance and setup of the IT infrastructure of the centre, including SAW Video’s server.

Qualifications:

The selected individual will have:

Several years of technical experience in digital editing, specifically with Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and Protools, as well as familiarity with AVID, other Adobe software applications and DVD Studio Pro;
Strong knowledge of high-definition video technology workflow;
Significant technical experience in the setup and configuration of digital editing equipment;
Technical experience in digital video production, especially with pro-sumer level SD, HDV and HD cameras.
Experience in video encoding and DVD creation;
IT experience in computer operating systems and hardware, networking and file storage;
Experience in analogue video production and post-production would be an asset;
Excellent people skills and ability to multi-task;
Familiarity with the non-profit media arts sector;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Bilingualism would be an asset.

Local Television Production Company Casts Hosts for New W Network Television Series!
Get ready for “Lights! Camera! Action”! The production company that chronicled neophyte restaurateurs Caroline Ishii and Dave Loan as they gambled their life savings and opened up ZenKitchen – the new Ottawa Centretown vegan restaurant – in The Restaurant Adventures of Caroline & Dave (W Network), is now bringing a ‘real people doing real things’ sensibility to their roster of popular design programming with their latest project, ALL FOR NOTHING, set to premiere on the W Network this fall.

THE PREMISE:
ALL FOR NOTHING is one part design transformation series, and one part fast-paced real estate drama; a one hour TV series that pits homeowner against homeowner in a competition to ready their neglected homes for sale. The catch? They have only 2 weeks to complete the transformation, and even less money to work with – nothing! Jam-packed full of ideas and tips from the shows hosts, a top notch real estate agent and an award winning interior designer, motivation will be high as the two sets of homeowners will be competing for a money-saving prize: the commission-free listing services of the real estate agent host.
After a city-wide casting call, Mountain Road is pleased to announce that it has officially cast the ALL FOR NOTHING hosts! Debuting for the first time in a television series, Mountain Road is delighted to introduce PAUL RUSHFORTH, a savvy Ottawa real estate agent with a strong sense of interior design. Paul will be hosting alongside award-winning designerPENNY SOUTHAM, known for her designer-expertise in seasons 1 and 2 ofDesign U and recent winner of the 2009 Greater Ottawa’s Home Builder’s Association (GOHBA) award for interior design. Local award-winning designer Penny Southam is known for creating inner spaces with modern lines and classic elements always with an emphasis on function. Penny’s portfolio consists of commercial, hospitality and residential design for a client list that extends to Vancouver and New York.

Penny will tour each ALL FOR NOTHING home with an eye to making the home functional and pleasing to potential buyers. Making her way from room to room she will formulate a plan for the homeowners, keeping in mind that they have little to no budget to spend and that they will be completing these tasks themselves. She will provide a solid plan to each home’s owners – but then it’s up to them to make it happen!

“I’m excited to be one of the co-hosts of this new series. Paul and I are good friends but tend to disagree on many points which can make it very interesting, to say the least. Throughout the two weeks of hard work we become the homeowners’ cheering squad and at times, their task master. The series calls for 26 homeowners, and the casting is ongoing.

“The search for homeowners will focus on finding couples and families who get excited by creative solutions that don’t break the bank, who are intrigued by alternatives to a cash-economy, and are happy to strap on a tool belt – even if they’ve never done it before” says producer Lisa Nault.

What do Olympians, Jenn Heil, Steve Omischl, Patrick Chan, Jon Montgomery, Joannie Rochette have to do with 27Forty Studios? Well, check it out!

Canadians are getting an up-close and personal look at the lighter side of their Olympic athletes with an original vignette campaign produced by 27Forty Studios and CTV/Rogers, Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium. The recently completed ‘Get To Know Your Canadian Athletes’ campaign showcases 25 top English and French Olympians as they reveal surprising details about their personalities and lifestyles. Each athlete is profiled five different ways, for a whopping total of 125 vignettes. The vignettes air nationally in English and French through February 2010 on the Consortium’s 40+ television assets and promotional partners, as well as on the Consortium’s dedicated websites, CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca. ‘Get To Know Your Canadian Athletes’ complements the Consortium’s BELIEVE promotional campaign.
“It’s been an incredible few years for our studio. We were very fortunate to get in early on, pretty much at ground zero with the consortium and quickly develop a very dynamic relationship, despite the Ottawa- Toronto distance ” said 27Forty Producer/Director, Dave Bigelow. The vignette production spanned over a two year period taking the 27Forty production team to green screen studio facilities in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. With all 25 athletes shot and “in the can”, 27Forty began the fully High Definition post production phase that included story development, video editing, 2 and 3d compositing, motion graphic design and audio/music design. “Since we are essentially a boutique style creative studio, we had to ramp up staff and facilities very fast to produce 125 original motion graphical pieces that represented each athlete in Olympic size fashion. . All said and done, we are very proud of the results.” said 27Forty’s Creative Director, Sean Cusson.
Another notable side deal that 27Forty Studios inked along the way was with Cineplex Theaters. Cineplex requested 24 alternate version Olympic Athlete profiles to promote the upcoming in theatre “Olympic Games, Broadcast at Cineplex” experience... and 27Forty delivered. These profiles ran on the big screens all over Canada over the past 14 months prior to feature presentations.

Since 1990 Isabelle Raynauld has devised, scripted, or directed many film and TV productions. In 1990 the filmmaker worked on the research and screenplay for Clip-Globe, a five-episode documentary miniseries for Radio-Québec's Nord-Sud. Raynauld wrote the script for L'hiver apprivoisé as part of the weekly program Comment ça va? at Radio-Canada, which won a Prix Gémeaux. She worked on the script of the fiction-feature Emporte-moi directed by Léa Pool, which was awarded the Best Screenplay Award at the Chicago Film Festival and an Ecumenical Jury Prize at Berlin, 1999. In 2002, she won the Jutra for Best Documentary for Le Minot d'Or, which she conceived, wrote and directed.

As well as being an experienced documentary filmmaker and accomplished screenwriter, Isabelle Raynauld has been teaching film studies since 1989: first at Concordia University, then at Université de Montréal, where she is a tenured professor in the Art History and Film Studies department. She trains emerging filmmakers and her courses, lectures, workshops and articles teach and enhance the skills of film artisans, especially in screenwriting. Raynauld holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Paris VII University.

MYSTICAL BRAIN, by Isabelle Raynauld will be screened Friday, February 12 at 7pm at Club SAW.
Mystical Brain (2007) addresses the question: Is it possible to shed light on the states of grace experienced by mystics and those who meditate? Raynauld shows us the most recent discoveries of scientific research on this phenomenon. Carmelite nuns and Buddhist monks agreed to be part of the experiment. "I am certain that the Buddhist nature is somewhere in the brain," declares the Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism. The film shows us the exploratory work of a team from the Université de Montréal. It seems that mystical ecstasy is a profoundly transformative experience and could contribute to people's psychic and bodily health, treat depression and speed up the healing process in patients who combine meditation with conventional medicine. Mystical Brain was produced by the National Film Board. In French with English subtitles.

Le cerveau mystique (2007) explore la question : Peut-on faire la lumière sur les états de grâce vécus par les mystiques et les personnes en état de méditation? La documentariste Isabelle Raynauld fournit l'occasion d'accéder au coeur du chapitre le plus récent de la recherche scientifique portant sur ce phénomène. Des carmélites et des moines bouddhistes ont accepté de se prêter à l'expérience. «Je suis convaincu que la nature bouddhique se trouve quelque part dans le cerveau,» déclare le Dalaï-lama, chef spirituel des bouddhistes tibétains. Le film nous présente, notamment, les travaux exploratoires d'une équipe de l'Université de Montréal. L'extase mystique serait une expérience profondément transformatrice. Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam

“Taqwa” (the Arabic word for "higher consciousness”) is at the heart of this doc, which explores a budding music scene that “celebrates Islam while rebelling, in typical punk fashion, against the social and political constraints of the religion… [and] proves every culture has at least one unexplored underbelly.” Three years in the making, this feature documentary follows the progression of the Muslim Punk scene: from its imaginary inception in a novel written by a white-convert named Michael Muhammad Knight to a full-blown, real-life scene of Muslim punk bands and their fans.

When he was 17, Michael Knight left his mother’s home in Rochester to study Islam at a Pakistani madrassa. It was his first act of rebellion – against his abusive, schizophrenic, white-supremacist father. Years later, burned out on the demands of religious dogma, Mike rebelled once more – by penning a Muslim Punk manifesto called The Taqwacores. His work of fiction struck a chord with young Muslims around the world and before long, real-life Taqwacore bands were creating a scene. This film follows Michael and his band of Muslim punks as they journey across the U.S. and Pakistan, transforming their worlds, their religion and themselves through the spirit of Taqwacore.

Join us to celebrate the New Year with RESOLUTION 2010, the anticipated annual screening of new works from SAW Video members. The event will be held on Thursday, January 28th at Mayfair Theatre, 1074 Bank Street, at 7:00pm. Admission is $5.

Featuring independent works produced in 2009, the programme is comprised of eleven short videos created by SAW Video’s prolific membership. Caron’s award-winning films have screened in festivals around the world, and he’s contributed to Canadian media such as the Globe & Mail and CBC Radio 1. This animated short delivers innocent graphics, dark realities and disturbing fun.

Izabel Barsive, Lustrale, 9 min.
Barsive specializes in the production of video works for the performing arts, collaborating recently with the National Arts Centre in the POPS series, and with André Perrier for the show “Les héritiers de Champlain”. Produced, directed by Barsive and choreographed by Anik Bouvrette (Tara Luz Danse), Lustrale is a dance art film that chronicles a journey shared by two women as they approach the hereafter, guided by the poetry and sensuality of water and light.

Pixie Cram, Prometheus in Five Directions, 15 min.
Cram’s films span narrative, music video, and stop-motion formats. Her work has been shown at festivals across Canada and internationally. Prometheus in Five Directions is a cybernetic re-telling of the myth of Prometheus.

Tasha Waldron, La Petite Mort, 4 min.
Waldron’s work to date includes dramatic shorts, experimental films and music videos that have been broadcast and exhibited at various festivals and screenings. La Petite Mort rejects socially constructed notions of female sexuality as the film’s female protagonist is empowered to take control of her own sexuality, through a briefly ecstatic encounter.

John Graham, Hidden Cities, 2 min.
Graham, originally an architect, has been the recipient of many art awards, fellowships and prizes. He has exhibited his prints, artist books, drawings, paintings, and installations and participated in artist residencies around the world. This two-minute short is a fantastical montage of stop-motion animation and object animation of an imaginary city that exists in an interior world. Dreams can awaken our conscious lives.

Rehab Nazzal, A Night at Home, 4 min.
Nazzal is a Palestinian-born multidisciplinary artist who has lived and worked in several countries in the Middle East and Eastern Europe before immigrating to Canada in 1995. Nazzal has exhibited her work locally and nationally. A Night at Home is about life under occupation; fear, control, and the little information known about it in the outside world.

Deniz Berkin, Late Nights and Green Lights, 4 min. 15 sec.
Berkin has shot over 25 short films and has had films screened all across North America. Currently Berkin is the President on the Independent Film Cooperative (IFCO) board of directors. Late Nights and Green Lights: By today’s standards Jay Gatsby would probably be considered an obsessive stalker. If you look past that and place yourself in the 1920s then Gatsby becomes the sad, lonely romantic figure that has been his place in modern literature.

Penny McCann, The Professor and the Blind Girl, 7 min. 8 sec.
A media artist since 1990, McCann’s award-winning work has been exhibited at festivals and galleries nationally and internationally. In The Professor and the Blind Girl, a young soldier returns from World War I, traumatized and unable to speak. A chance encounter with a strange professor and his companion, a psychic blind girl, restores his power of speech and with it, his hope for the future.

Theo Pelmus, Liquid for the Fall , 10 min.
Pelmus is a performance artist who has received several awards and grants. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and is currently pursuing a second MFA at the University of Ottawa. Liquid for the Fall is the video-component of the performance The Fall/Sweet Art Transformative Performance from a series in which time marks stages of radical transformation/ transcendence. Here, the viewer experiences the ecstasy of the fall.

Eric Walker, Up in Smoke, 1 min. 49 sec.
Walker studied video and media art practice at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He has worked on three feature films, collaborated with Penny McCann on numerous projects, and his works have been shown at festivals in Canada and abroad. Up in Smoke is one of two short videos about Tom Thomson which represent an exploration into the nature of artist identity.

Ed Folger, Water Light and Chaos: Art by Juan Geuer, 20 min. 9 sec.
Folger works as a still photographer/filmmaker, editor, and writer. He wrote and directed a feature film for PBS (Nanook Taxi) and produced the earliest Inuktitut TV programming on Baffin Island. This video explores Juan Geuer’s acclaimed installation, ‘WiS’ (Water in Suspense), in which a single water droplet and an orange laser beam create a powerful visual experience that changes as the water drop forms and then falls away, in a darkened room.

A special tribute will be given to these companies and individuals from the National Capital Region whose work in film, television or animation, has recently been acknowledged:

Golden Age Warriors/ Champions Grisonnants (a Balestra production) received a Best Documentary Award in the “Individual Sports" category at the 27th annual Sport Movies & TV International Festival in Milan.

Martin Cadotte received a Prix Gémeaux for best directing for a documentary series for Destination Nor'Ouest II (Les Productions R. Charbonneau inc. & Les Productions Rivard Inc).

Serge Côté, an independent TV and film composer was nominated this year for two Gemini Awards; Original Music Score for Rollbots (Amberwood Entertainment) and A World of Wonders, The Amazon Rainforest (Genuine Pictures). He was also nominated for two Prix Gémeaux and two Summit International Awards.

Sharon Buckingham, President at TSB Productions Inc., was a writer (with Andrew Wreggitt) and creative producer on a CTV movie called STICKS & STONES which won the Shaw ROCKET PRIZE for Best Canadian Family Program in May 2009. This movie also won "Best Foreign Film" at the International Family Film Festival held in Los Angeles and was also nominated this year for Best TV movie at the Canadian Indy Awards and was a nominee in the same category for a Gemini Award last year.

David Burns (composer) was nominated for 2 Gémeaux– Best score and best musical theme for the documentary series Destination Nor'Ouest II (Les Productions R. Charbonneau inc. & Les Productions Rivard Inc). He also received a nomination for a Gemini Award for Best Music in a Documentary or Lifestyle series for “Design U” (Mountain Road Productions).

David Chernushenko (Director) received a "Green Apple" Award at the 2009 Green Lifestyle Film Festival in Los Angeles for his documentary film "Be the Change".

Matt West (Director) won "Best Canadian Short Film" at the Charlottetown International Film Festival (P.E.I.) in September 2008 for "The Funeral... Again!" (Quiet Revolution Pictures Inc. Michael A. Dobbin, Producer).

Lois Siegel an Ottawa Producer, Director, Casting Director & Photographer received this year the Twenty-Fourth Annual Ethel N. Fortner Writer and Community Award by St. Andrew's Presbyterian College (Laurinburg, North Carolina).

Tom Shoebridge, one of the Ottawa region’s most recognized Canadian screenwriters and founder of the Canadian Screen Training Centre and the Summer Institute of Film and Television, was inducted this year in the Algonquin College Media Hall of Fame.

Annie Coutu, Producer (Aisha Productions) was recognised for her carrier as a finalist for a « prix d'excellence Gilles-Gagné » at the « 10e CULTURIADES DE LA FONDATION POUR LES ARTS, LES LETTRES ET LA CULTURE EN OUTAOUAIS ». A tribute gala was held recently by the city of Gatineau for her documentary film “Rouler vers l’autonomie”.

Mathieu Provost (music composer) was a Finalist for the « Prix de la Relève » at the « 10e CULTURIADES DE LA FONDATION POUR LES ARTS, LES LETTRES ET LA CULTURE EN OUTAOUAIS ».

Mountain Road Productions recently received at the 2009 New York Festivals a Finalist Certificate for The Real Estate Adventures of Sandy and Maryse (Docudrama, 2009 International TV Programming & Promotion) and a Gold World Medal for Design U (Educational/Instructional TV, 2009 International TV Programming & Promotion).

GAPC Entertainment Inc. (Producers Hoda Elatawi & Ken Stewart) received a Silver Remi Award for "SPELLZ" in the TV Series - Family /Children category at the Houston International Film Festival, Television & Cable Production Awards. GAPC received The Silver Pinnacle Award for best TV Promotion (ad spot or PSA) for the "Genies".

Stephen MacDonald: his film, "Doug and Rickles' Big Score" was the winner at this year’s BoxcART Film Festival. “Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer “(Brookstreet Pictures corp.) winner of Best DVD release at the 2009 Saturn awards.

The Pinecrest Diaries (Holmwood/Hot Flash Productions, Susan Stranks, Producer) won an honourable mention at the 2008 56th Columbus International Film &Video Festival, also known as The Chris Awards. Susan Stranks, an award winning filmmaker and television producer, was also inducted this year in the Algonquin College Media Hall of Fame.

Pierre-Luc Lafontaine, a young Ottawa actor, was awarded best performance by an actor in the short film « Déraciné » at the Fantasia int’l Film Festival. He’s also a main actor in many television shows (LA GALÈRE, MACARONI TOUT GARNI etc.) and in films (LE POIL DE LA BÊTE, QUITTER MONTRÉAL and 5150 RUE DES ORMES).

RollBots (Amberwood Entertainment) has earned this year a Gemini Award for Best Direction (George Elliott and Joey So, Directors) in an Animated Series or Program. RollBots was also nominated for two Gemini Awards for Best Animated Program or Series and Best Original Music Score for an Animated Program or Series.

Produced, directed by Izabel Barsive and choreographed by Anik Bouvrette (Tara Luz Danse), Lustrale is a dance art film that was presented at many festivals around the world.

W Network series chronicles Ottawa couple, Caroline Ishii and Dave Loan, as they gamble their life savings on opening their own restaurant.

Get ready for thirteen weeks of drama as neophyte restaurateurs, Caroline Ishii and Dave Loan, struggle to realize their dream of opening ZenKitchen, a vegetarian restaurant, situated in Ottawa’s trendy Chinatown.

In this yearlong journey, nothing goes smoothly for Caroline and Dave. Each gives up a successful career only to discover they don’t know the first thing about running a restaurant. Putting their life savings, relationship and sanity on the line in order to share their passion for vegetarian cuisine rapidly takes the Zen out of ZenKitchen.

This loving couple find themselves on a rollercoaster ride of real estate troubles, money woes, AWOL contractors, fires in the kitchen and staff walking out the door. But somehow, through it all, they keep the dream alive. Although Chef Caroline Ishii is not quite sure why:

"Everyday I question why I do it and question why I love it and hate it at the same time. Maybe I equate it to having kids, you love them and they're the greatest joy in your life but sometimes you could tear your hair out. I'm hoping that ZenKitchen will eventually grow up."

Executive Producer, Tim Alp, is thrilled with how the series has turned out:

In the first episode, premiering Wednesday, January 6 at 9 p.m., Caroline and Dave prepare a final catering gig as part of their small scale catering business. However, it’s not the last meal they will serve as they plan to branch out of the catering business and open their own gourmet vegan restaurant. They soon hit their first road block when they can’t find an appropriate location for the restaurant. It goes from bad to worse when the bank tells the couple that they are not eligible for the loan that they applied for, but they forge ahead with their search and eventually find the perfect place. Things begin to look up after a last minute offer from a different bank keeps the dream alive, but the good news is short lived when Caroline is given some bad news about her father.

THE RESTAURANT ADVENTURES OF CAROLINE & DAVE is a thirteen-part docu-drama series that sees Caroline and Dave’s romantic vision of creating ZenKitchen quickly become a dramatic rollercoaster ride of fights, laughter and tears. Daniel Cross is the founding co-owner of EyeSteelFilm, a documentary production house in Montreal. Grants for Visible Minority Video Artists

SAW Video is pleased to announce the launch of the Cultural Equity Production Fund, a video production support program aimed at providing opportunities for visible minority artists living in the Ottawa-Gatineau area.

SAW Video is a not-for-profit centre for the media arts committed to providing assistance to independent videomakers to help ensure the continued success of a vibrant and diversified community. With this fund, visible minority video artists can follow in the footsteps of artists such as Khanhthuan Tran (2001 recipient) and Tasha Waldron (2006 recipient), building on their production and post-production skills to bring their video ideas to life.

“The Cultural Equity Fund is a wonderful opportunity. Granting programs like this are important in providing opportunities for visible minority artists such as myself to have the ability and access to express myself creatively through the medium of video. This fund has been extremely important to me as I would not have been able to create my project without it. It was a great first grant for me to learn how to apply for funding from an organization and it has also helped me secure additional funding for a new project.” Tasha Waldron, 2006 Cultural Equity Production Fund recipient

Applicants to the fund can be at any stage of their career: emerging, mid-career or established. Up to three awards will be given. Proposals are assessed by an independent jury and the successful applicants have one year to complete their project.

Eligible projects are those over which the artist has creative and editorial control. All genres are accepted (i.e. experimental, drama, documentary, video installation, and new media). Artists crossing over from other disciplines (i.e. theatre, writing, visual arts, and dance) are also welcome. Feature-length projects, however, are not eligible. In addition, editing of successful projects must take place at SAW Video.

The successful applicants will receive a one-year producing membership at SAW Video, up to $1,200 in access to SAW Video equipment, $250 credit towards workshops offered by SAW Video, up to $200 in cash, and a copy of the SAW Video Production Handbook. If you dare, join the members and supporters of SAW Video who will descend in costume upon 67 Nicholas Street for the SAW Masquerade. In addition to great door and costume prizes, there will be a Mini‐Museum of Horror featuring gory props created by infamous local horror filmmakers like Lee Demarbre, Brian Singleton, Brett Kelly, and Josh Grace; a performance by the equally infamous Sexual Overtones with their unique blend of burlesque, vaudeville entertainment and mummies; a Classic Horror Movie Fest; a macabre Balloon Sculptor; a (scary) Silent Auction; a ghoulish Mask Making table; and VJ Daisy and DJ Mr. Caffrey who will be spinning freaky tunes all night long. Outside in the SAW courtyard, a Thriller Dance workshop by Thrill the World Ottawa will help to get you in the zombie mood. SAW Masquerade gets underway at 7pm, with family‐friendly entertainment until 10pm. 27FORTY STUDIOS: Ottawa’s newest boutique style production, VFX, motion graphic and design studio.

Located in the Capital’s west end, the new production studio is spearheaded by producer/ director Dave Bigelow (co-founder of Atomic Productions), Sean Cusson (principal of the motion-graphic design firm, Q Media) and Ron Gallant (owner of Affinity Productions, the National Capital Region’s leading production and post-production facility).

The new collective will focus on design-driven creative and offers a wide range of services such as 2 and 3d motion graphic design, punchy editorial and live-action production to the broadcast, corporate and commercial producer. With many years experience on the production playground, 27FORTY Studios is designed to play well with others and can be plugged in at any stage.

“We’ve known each other for a long time but only worked together for the first time last year,” says Dave. “I noticed that there were complimentary skill sets at play and this dynamic really made the end results so much better... to team up with these guys was a no-brainer for me.”

With a large catalog of past broadcast, corporate and commercial credentials including many of the major Canadian and US Networks, 27FORTY Studios is forging on as a creative force that is determined to offer clients something different... something better.

“Taking on two new partners is a pretty big change. It's both scary and fun. We play well off of each other and push ourselves a lot harder,” says Sean. “The work we did as individuals was great but we're really stepping it up now. It's amazing what you can create when you step out of your comfort zone.”

The facility is armed with creative and technical talent that is passionate and dedicated to advancing in the production industry. The latest technology includes access and workflow with RED cameras, Final Cut Studio HD, Final Cut Server with Apple X-Serve and PromiseRaid Servers as the facility’s backbone and storage backup. The studios also boasts a 15 seat Mac based production environment loaded with Adobe Creative Suite CS4 for 2d, Maya and Cinema 4D for 3d along with a truckload of specialty VFX apps and plug-ins. All this is available and heavily utilized to pump out projects on time, on budget... and with flare.

For six fateful months in 1919, Paris was the centre of the world, as presidents, prime ministers and emirs descended on the city to broker peace “for all time” after the most devastating war in history. Inspired by Margaret MacMillan’s masterful work of popular history, director Paul Cowan’s docudrama PARIS 1919 revisits the event with a vivid sense of narrative and reflects upon one of the great missed opportunities of history.

Gatineau-based filmmakers Robert and Brenda Rooney make international documentaries which “explore the theme of building bridges between people who face profound life challenges.” The Rooneys will workshop Great Granny
Revolution, “an uplifting story about the Wakefield Grannies, 12 Canadian women, who offer moral and financial support to a group of Gogos (grandmothers), raising AIDS-orphaned grandchildren, in South Africa’s Alexandra Township.” This workshop explores the 4-walling and marketing strategy behind Granny. Workshop participants will work in groups to produce their own 4-walling and marketing package on a specific project.

Alan White Memorial Bursary Fund

The Alan White Memorial Bursary Fund has been set up through the Algonquin College Foundation, which enables individuals and companies to contribute towards student bursaries, scholarship awards, educational equipment and facility enhancements. Our community members wish to raise $6,250 before March 31 to qualify for a provincial government program that will match our donations dollar for dollar. With more than $12,000 in place, the Fund will support students in perpetuity and deliver a minimum annual award of $500.

WHITE, Alan Lorne On January 24, 2009, age 50 years, after a courageous battle with diabetes. Beloved son of Lois (Honey) and John (deceased); devoted brother of Gary (Claire), Bill (Romaine) and Jim; proud uncle of Neil, David and Sophia. Alan spent his boyhood years on the NATO base in Ramstein, West Germany. By the time he graduated as co-president of Laurentian High School in Ottawa, he'd visited virtually every cathedral and museum in Europe, seen the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, been to the top of the Eiffel Tower, walked the trenches at Vimy and the beaches at Normandy, faced the cliffs at Dieppe and covered his ears at Formula One races in Silverstone, England and Spa, Belgium. Fresh from Algonquin College's broadcasting program in 1979, Alan scooped his first industry job with CKO Radio in Toronto. Within nine months he'd risen from the network's lowest position to one of its most senior. He returned to Ottawa to pursue his dream of producing television programs, first at the community level with Ottawa Cablevision and then nationally and internationally as co-founder of Corvideocom Limited and General Assembly Production Centre. Alan was an outspoken creative force in the Ottawa video production community for more than 25 years. A master storyteller and passionate educator, he mentored a generation of local production talent and earned dozens of national and international awards. In the 1980s, Alan was the pioneering producer of some of Canada's first music videos and, as president of Apprentice Records, he was instrumental in launching the international recording career of the popular Ottawa rock band Eight Seconds. Alan was founding chair of both the Algonquin College Screenwriting and Drama Advisory Board and New Media North, not to mention the Ottawa Chapter of House of Guitars. Irreverent, controversial and outrageously funny, Alan was no choirboy. He demonstrated humbling levels of courage, spirit and grace in confronting his many physical ailments, but never suffered fools with much tact. He was usually brilliant and exasperatingly stubborn in equal measure-one of those larger-than-life people about whom everything is big: his keen sense of honour and loyalty, profound kindness, commanding presence, unflagging generosity, infectious love of life and charmingly chivalrous nature. His family and friends want to express their deep affection for Al's network of caregivers, including his homecare providers, staff at the Rehabilitation Centre, Riverside Hospital dialysis unit, Jack Purcell Community Centre, the palliative team and fifth-floor medical staff at the Ottawa Heart Institute-with special kudos to Guillermo and nurses Eileen, Helene, Lianne and Anne. Throughout his prolonged battle he has rallied his community of friends, brought together many who had drifted apart and shown us all how death is in fact all about life. Though English is rich with adjectives appropriate to this magnificent and unforgettable soul, words fail the sadness and loss felt by all his many relatives, friends and colleagues. A private memorial service will be held for immediate family only. Alan's legion of friends will celebrate his life at an event in early February. Donations toward the creation of a scholarship in his name will be welcomed at that time. TECHNICAL COORDINATOR – POST-PRODUCTION

SAW Video Association (Ottawa) seeks a full-time Technical Coordinator (Post-production). He/she will work with the Technical Coordinator (Production) to provide post-production and production support to SAW Video members. This is a permanent full-time position.

Established in 1981, SAW Video is Eastern Ontario’s largest and oldest media art production centre. SAW Video provides many services to artists including affordable access to video production and post-production facilities, grant programs, a comprehensive range of introductory, intermediate and advanced workshops as well as screenings and exhibitions.

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
Starting salary: $31,000 per year with modest health/dental benefits

The Technical Coordinator (Post-production) will:
§ Oversee all aspects of SAW Video’s post-production equipment and facilities, including bookings; equipment purchases, maintenance and upkeep;
§ Oversee the maintenance and setup of the IT infrastructure of the centre, including SAW Video’s server;
§ Repair and maintain post-production equipment as required and ensure that post-production suites are well-maintained;
§ Provide technical support for members in edit suites as required;
Provide technical support for SAW Video websites including: liaising with the webmaster; troubleshooting technical problems, and uploading to Mediatheque website;
Assist Technical Coordinator (Production) as required;
Work with the Director and Technical Coordinator (Production) to set annual budgets for equipment purchase and maintenance;
Assist in the writing of grants, as well as preparing reports on and requests for equipment purchases.

Qualifications:
The selected individual will have:
Technical experience in digital editing software, specifically Final Cut Pro, AVID and Premiere, as well as other Adobe software applications and DVD Studio Pro;
Technical experience in digital video production, especially with pro-sumer level SD, HDV and HD cameras.
Familiarity with high-definition video technology workflow;
Experience in video encoding and DVD creation;
IT experience in computer operating systems and hardware, networking and file storage;
Experience in analogue video production or post-production would be an asset;
Excellent people skills and ability to multi-task;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Bilingualism is not required but would be an asset.

GAPC acquires Panasonic HPX3000

GAPC is pleased to announce that it has acquired the Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 the most advanced P2HD camera system. The camera records in 1080P, 1080i, 720P as well as DVCPRO50 and in AVC Intra compression or DVCPROHD compression.

“We are extremely pleased with both the creative latitude that the camera gives us with respect to set-up and in camera adjustments for painting as well as the technical and operational side” reports Ken Stewart, President of GAPC. “It takes some re-learning if you will, in terms of file management in the field, but in the end is much more efficient, flexible and can save significant time in the edit suite.”

The camera was recently used on a HD Drama GAPC was filming in New Brunswick on RB Bennett and its performance stood up and exceeded anything the company has used previously including the Cine Alta. “One of the important aspects is how easy it is to bring in the files to our HD Matrox Axio / Premiere editing system” reports Derek Prosser, Senior Editor at GAPC, “ All the files come in at two times faster than real-time and are already organized in their respective folders”.

The camera package comes complete with a mini-laptop, P2 reader and 500GB or 1TB hard drive. “It’s taken a while but I think Panasonic has really got a winning format here, it also gives a significant advantage to small shops in terms of not requiring VTR’s and going directly into the edit system.”
