PARIS 1919
Written, directed and photographed by Paul Cowan
Scénario, réalisation et image de Paul Cowan
For six fateful months in 1919, Paris was the centre of the world, as presidents, prime ministers and emirs descended on the city to broker peace “for all time” after the most devastating war in history. Inspired by Margaret MacMillan’s masterful work of popular history, director Paul Cowan’s docudrama PARIS 1919 revisits the event with a vivid sense of narrative and reflects upon one of the great missed opportunities of history.

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS IN THE SERIES
FEB. 28 MALCOLM HAMILTON
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
TV Documentary series director/producer turned “one-man-band” delivers a full day of activities around the solo doc maker and operator: “This day-long course is about video/documentary production that's done on a small scale: call it video production for the New Economy, if you want. Forget large budgets and multi-person crews instead, think stripped-down, lean and efficient. This is all about how to plan/shoot/direct and edit documentaries and corporate videos (more for DVD and web distribution than broadcast), by oneself.”
MARCH 14 MAGNUS ISACSSON
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
Veteran director of documentaries that take on social and political issues, Isacsson will guide workshop participants by way of his own work through the minefield of his specialty: the socially and politically committed film. “If you want to express a point of view, support a cause, or make people think about a certain subject, what are the main issues? Notions of objectivity, truth, point of view. Do you do it didactically or through storytelling ? How do you work with the points of view and objectives of your characters as opposed to ( or in conjunction with) your own? What are the potential strengths and pitfalls of point-of-view filmmaking?
MARCH 28 ROBERT and BRENDA ROONEY
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm
This workshop is for DIY filmmakers who want to take charge of their own marketing and distribution. Gatineau-based filmmakers Robert and Brenda Rooney make international documentaries which “explore the theme of building bridges between people who face profound life challenges.” The Rooneys will workshop Great Granny
Revolution, “an uplifting story about the Wakefield Grannies, 12 Canadian women, who offer moral and financial support to a group of Gogos (grandmothers), raising AIDS-orphaned grandchildren, in South Africa’s Alexandra Township.” This workshop explores the 4-walling and marketing strategy behind Granny. Workshop participants will work in groups to produce their own 4-walling and marketing package on a specific project.
APRIL 11 PETER WINTONICK
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: TBA
Canadian documentary maker at large, Peter Wintonick will guide workshop participants through the making of pilgrimage: “A father, Peter Wintonick, and his 19-year-old daughter, Mira, both filmmakers, take a cinematic road trip around the world. They trek through the present and future of film and image-making, using significant contemporary and historical cinematic sites and personal encounters as their points of departure. pilgrIMAGE is a trans-generational, cine-genetic meditation on media and its personal and social consequences. From a renowned documentarian of cinema’s Generation Why? to those of the next-wave era of Generation D (as in digital).”

Alan White, 1958-2009.
WHITE, Alan Lorne On January 24, 2009, age 50 years, after a courageous battle with diabetes. Beloved son of Lois (Honey) and John (deceased); devoted brother of Gary (Claire), Bill (Romaine) and Jim; proud uncle of Neil, David and Sophia. Alan spent his boyhood years on the NATO base in Ramstein, West Germany. By the time he graduated as co-president of Laurentian High School in Ottawa, he'd visited virtually every cathedral and museum in Europe, seen the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, been to the top of the Eiffel Tower, walked the trenches at Vimy and the beaches at Normandy, faced the cliffs at Dieppe and covered his ears at Formula One races in Silverstone, England and Spa, Belgium. Fresh from Algonquin College's broadcasting program in 1979, Alan scooped his first industry job with CKO Radio in Toronto. Within nine months he'd risen from the network's lowest position to one of its most senior. He returned to Ottawa to pursue his dream of producing television programs, first at the community level with Ottawa Cablevision and then nationally and internationally as co-founder of Corvideocom Limited and General Assembly Production Centre. Alan was an outspoken creative force in the Ottawa video production community for more than 25 years. A master storyteller and passionate educator, he mentored a generation of local production talent and earned dozens of national and international awards. In the 1980s, Alan was the pioneering producer of some of Canada's first music videos and, as president of Apprentice Records, he was instrumental in launching the international recording career of the popular Ottawa rock band Eight Seconds. Alan was founding chair of both the Algonquin College Screenwriting and Drama Advisory Board and New Media North, not to mention the Ottawa Chapter of House of Guitars. Irreverent, controversial and outrageously funny, Alan was no choirboy. He demonstrated humbling levels of courage, spirit and grace in confronting his many physical ailments, but never suffered fools with much tact. He was usually brilliant and exasperatingly stubborn in equal measure-one of those larger-than-life people about whom everything is big: his keen sense of honour and loyalty, profound kindness, commanding presence, unflagging generosity, infectious love of life and charmingly chivalrous nature. His family and friends want to express their deep affection for Al's network of caregivers, including his homecare providers, staff at the Rehabilitation Centre, Riverside Hospital dialysis unit, Jack Purcell Community Centre, the palliative team and fifth-floor medical staff at the Ottawa Heart Institute-with special kudos to Guillermo and nurses Eileen, Helene, Lianne and Anne. Throughout his prolonged battle he has rallied his community of friends, brought together many who had drifted apart and shown us all how death is in fact all about life. Though English is rich with adjectives appropriate to this magnificent and unforgettable soul, words fail the sadness and loss felt by all his many relatives, friends and colleagues. A private memorial service will be held for immediate family only. Alan's legion of friends will celebrate his life at an event in early February. Donations toward the creation of a scholarship in his name will be welcomed at that time. Anyone interested in learning more about the event may send an email to celebratealw@gmail.com Alan: it gets better.

GAPC acquires Panasonic HPX3000

GAPC is pleased to announce that it has acquired the Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 the most advanced P2HD camera system. The camera records in 1080P, 1080i, 720P as well as DVCPRO50 and in AVC Intra compression or DVCPROHD compression.
“We are extremely pleased with both the creative latitude that the camera gives us with respect to set-up and in camera adjustments for painting as well as the technical and operational side” reports Ken Stewart, President of GAPC. “It takes some re-learning if you will, in terms of file management in the field, but in the end is much more efficient, flexible and can save significant time in the edit suite.”
The camera was recently used on a HD Drama GAPC was filming in New Brunswick on RB Bennett and its performance stood up and exceeded anything the company has used previously including the Cine Alta. “One of the important aspects is how easy it is to bring in the files to our HD Matrox Axio / Premiere editing system” reports Derek Prosser, Senior Editor at GAPC, “ All the files come in at two times faster than real-time and are already organized in their respective folders”.
The camera package comes complete with a mini-laptop, P2 reader and 500GB or 1TB hard drive. “It’s taken a while but I think Panasonic has really got a winning format here, it also gives a significant advantage to small shops in terms of not requiring VTR’s and going directly into the edit system.”

"[Passage] is the most revolutionary documentary made in Canada since John Grierson founded the National Film Board nearly 60 years ago." Stephen Pedersen, THE CHRONICLE HERALD
This beautiful and dramatic documentary feature film sheds stunning new light on Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated attempt to discover the Northwest Passage. Reports of madness and cannibalism shook the English-speaking world in 1851 but the story also vaults into the present and ends with a moving conclusion, challenging the way we look at history. See trailer: http://www.nfb.ca/passage

Tax credits for film and television: They work!

Tax credits for film and television: They work!
A first for Outaouais:
SODEC and CAVCO representatives meet local filmmakers
La Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) and the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office
(CAVCO) are pleased to invite the local production community to an information session on tax credit programs offered
by both agencies. This conference, opened to all, will target seasoned and first-time film and television producers.
The Québec tax credits
The Québec and Canadian governments tax credits incentives for producers are the envy of many countries. For a
filmmaker producing in the Outaouais region, a combination of these credits can represent up to 35% of a production
budget! As an add-on, the Québec Government recently announced new tax credit measures for the use of special effects
and green screens. Jean-Philippe Normandeau, Director of the SODECs tax credit program, will explain these programs
and the impact they have on productions. He will also address issues pertaining to cross-border workflow and the labour
force.
The Canadian tax credits :
Placide Turenne of CAVCO will give insight on their programs: the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit
(CPTC) and the Film or Video Production Services Tax Credit (PSTC).
Some topics of discussion will include:
-The new programs (SODEC)
-Regional bonus policy
-New incentives for special effects and green screens
-The grinding effect
-Converging towards gaming and the web
-Québec labour working in Ontario
-Why Ottawa's industry continues to grow while Outaouais' stagnates

Ottawa's Bartmart Audio Approved for Dolby 5.1 Cinema Surround Sound Mixing

Bartmart Audio Inc., announced today that Studio One of Bartmart's four room audio post production facility has been approved for Dolby® Digital 5.1 cinema surround sound print mastering by Dolby Laboratories, Inc.
“We are pleased that Bartmart met our strict requirements for theatrical sound production facilities,
ensuring that their clients’ mixes will translate well to theatres,” commented Bill Allen, Sr. Director,
Production Services, Dolby New York. Steve Smith, Film Applications Engineer for Dolby’s New York
Production Services department, stated that Bartmart had passed this highest level of approval
“...with flying colors.” The completion of this final stage marks a two-year refit of Bartmart's main mix
room, including the installation of new room acoustic treatments and new equipment. Wayne Bartlett,
founder and president of Bartmart Audio observed that, “this establishes Bartmart as the premier
audio post-production facility in the region and the only Dolby-approved facility between Toronto and
Montreal.”
The certification gives the region's burgeoning film and television community the opportunity to
complete a 5.1 mix for cinema print master in Ottawa. It also offers producers from the Toronto area
access to the increased tax credits available for work undertaken outside of the Toronto area, and
offers non-cinema clients the peace of mind of the commitment to quality that the Dolby name
confers.
According to Mr. Bartlett, completing the upgrade over a two-year period allowed the company to
avoid any increase in rates for the facility, keeping Bartmart competitive in a price-sensitive market.
Included in the equipment upgrades are the Digidesign ICON D-Command 24 fader mixing console,
the Dolby LM100 broadcast level meter and the region's only Dolby DP570 Dolby E/ Dolby Digital
emulator. The DP570 allows both engineers and clients to hear the results of all final broadcast
audio settings in real time and locked to picture. This is an important piece of equipment for the
setting of critical metadata, including “dialnorm” to ensure proper playback of DVD's and HD Dolby E
broadcast content audio to the final audience.
Bartmart has also integrated the Surcode Dolby ProLogic II encoder to deliver ProLogic II encoded
5.0 surround audio as a standard stereo deliverable. This product allows delivery of 5.0 surround
sound audio over standard definition television.
Established in 1996, Bartmart Audio Inc. is a leading provider of audio production and post-
production services located in Ottawa, Canada. The company offers full-service audio production for
cinema, broadcast television, corporate, radio and web. Bartmart's services have been further
enhanced by the addition of Dolby Laboratories’ approval for print mastering of 5.1 cinema surround
sound. Dolby and Pro Logic are registered trademarks of Dolby Laboratories, Inc.

KNIGHT ENTERPRISES & SYMPATICO/MSN
KNIGHT ENTERPRISES & SYMPATICO/MSN partner to produce & distribute internet video.
The video "webisodes" are some of the highest quality content produced specifically for the internet with production values comparable to television content.
OTTAWA, Ontario, July 8th, 2008 - Knight Enterprises, one of Canada's leading media content providers, today announced a groundbreaking partnership to develop & distribute high-quality internet videos with SYMPATICO/MSN. By addressing the economic challenges normally associated with producing original video content for exclusive distribution over the web, they have created a unique and viable business model that accelerates the development of internet specific video content.
Knight Enterprises has produced a series of wine & food videos for streaming over broadband that are only available from Sympatico at http://cmpgnr.com/r.html?c=1265912&r=1264828&t=1418938192&l=1&d=89816128&u=http%3a%2f%2flifestyle%2esympatico%2emsn%2eca%2fFoodandEntertaining%2fCooking101&g=0&f=-1
The videos, now available on-demand, feature food techniques & wine knowledge information which is meant to be used as a reference tool for people at home. The video series is designed to bring the viewer back time and again, creating a significant number of impressions for advertisers. "People already use the web to learn about wine & food. This new series provides a high-quality video resource as an alternative," says Chris Knight, President of Knight Enterprises. "We designed this collection to be a reference library. They aren't just a distraction to pass the time but rather a destination to learn about something you're interested in. The future of internet consumption is in moving pictures, not flat screen text."
Sympatico/MSN recognizes the need to provide internet users with a rich media experience similar to the production values available on television. Hosting high-quality video has positioned Sympatico/MSN as the industry leader in internet video development. "The lines between traditional television and the internet are blurring," states Knight. "Websites are starting to deliver an audiovisual experience at least as good, if not better, than conventional television. This series of videos is a perfect example."
The partnership addresses the growing demand for video content made exclusively for the internet. As a result, this first installment of what will become an expansive catalogue of internet videos produced by Knight Enterprises is not re-purposed television (content formatted for television that has been re-purposed for web use). According to Knight, "You can't just take an old TV show, re-cut it, and throw it on the web. Viewers consume media differently on their PC or mobile device, and that has to be taken into account during the development process."
Knight is confident that the market will support and demand more exclusive internet video content. "The public is accustomed to a level of quality in their media, and this partnership has addressed that."
Knight Enterprises is a Canadian based media production and distribution company providing lifestyle and reality content for multi-platform delivery. Since 1996, Knight Enterprises has produced over 400 half hours of programming. Our award winning programming includes Cook Like A Chef, The Great Canadian Food Show, License to Grill, This Food, That Wine, Road Grill and Junk Brothers.
