Doing Business at a Film Festival

What type of financial strategy do you have for your film and how do film festivals fit in? Can you do business at places like HOT-DOCS, Sundance, IDFA, Tribeca, Sheffield? And what type of business should you expect? Or is it all show and no business? Are festivals only for an elite group of filmmakers and meager budgets should be spent elsewhere?

Listen to two experienced filmmakers who understand the world of documentary film finance and how film festivals fit into this process. Daniel Cross is the founding co-owner of EyeSteelFilm, a documentary production house in Montreal. He is the executive producer of award winning films such as Up the Yangste and RiP: A remix manifesto. He is also the director of SPIT: Squeegee Punks in Traffic, THE STREET: a film with the homeless, CHAIRMAN GEORGE: From Athens to Beijing. Daniel is an assistant professor at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University. Felice Gorica of Gorica Productions of Toronto is the author of Canadian Television Financing: the Buck Starts Here. SAW Video Cultural Equity Production Fund

Cultural Equity Production Fund
Grants for Visible Minority Video Artists
Deadline: November 2, 2009

SAW Video is pleased to announce the launch of the Cultural Equity Production Fund, a video production support program aimed at providing opportunities for visible minority artists living in the Ottawa-Gatineau area.

SAW Video is a not-for-profit centre for the media arts committed to providing assistance to independent videomakers to help ensure the continued success of a vibrant and diversified community. With this fund, visible minority video artists can follow in the footsteps of artists such as Khanhthuan Tran (2001 recipient) and Tasha Waldron (2006 recipient), building on their production and post-production skills to bring their video ideas to life.

“The Cultural Equity Fund is a wonderful opportunity. Granting programs like this are important in providing opportunities for visible minority artists such as myself to have the ability and access to express myself creatively through the medium of video. This fund has been extremely important to me as I would not have been able to create my project without it. It was a great first grant for me to learn how to apply for funding from an organization and it has also helped me secure additional funding for a new project.” Tasha Waldron, 2006 Cultural Equity Production Fund recipient

Applicants to the fund can be at any stage of their career: emerging, mid-career or established. Up to three awards will be given. Proposals are assessed by an independent jury and the successful applicants have one year to complete their project.

Eligible projects are those over which the artist has creative and editorial control. All genres are accepted (i.e. experimental, drama, documentary, video installation, and new media). Artists crossing over from other disciplines (i.e. theatre, writing, visual arts, and dance) are also welcome. Feature-length projects, however, are not eligible. In addition, editing of successful projects must take place at SAW Video.

The successful applicants will receive a one-year producing membership at SAW Video, up to $1,200 in access to SAW Video equipment, $250 credit towards workshops offered by SAW Video, up to $200 in cash, and a copy of the SAW Video Production Handbook. More information on the Cultural Equity Production Fund is available on SAW Video’s website: www.sawvideo.com.

SAW Video is an artist-run-centre committed to support ground breaking artistic production, presentation and programming of independent video and media art. SAW Video provides many services to its membership including affordable technical facilities, and a wide range of programmes designed to create an atmosphere that will inspire production through the exchange of ideas around form, content and style.

Gemini nominated World of Wonders launches new season

Genuine Pictures Inc. is pleased to announce the third season launch of their popular
children’s series, A WORLD OF WONDERS. It premieres on TVOKids on September 7,
2009 at 6:30pm. A WORLD OF WONDERS is a live action series that allows young
viewers to become armchair travelers as they criss-cross the globe, delighting in its
wonders, cultures, colours, sounds and flavours. WOW also debuts on
Saskatchewan’s SCN on September 28th, 2009 at noon.

Under the tutelage of a Webmaster (newcomer Sami Botros), host Cari Leslie receives
clues that guide her on this ultimate learning odyssey. This season, Cari soars above the
Jordanian desert on an ultra light, hangs out with reptiles in the Galapagos Islands, zip
lines through the rainforest in Costa Rica, catches baby puffins in Iceland, assists a
mahout at an elephant orphanage in Laos, and explores Cambodia’s magnificent Angkor
Wat. She even carries out equatorial experiments in the middle of the world. And in
Mexico, Cari visits a butterfly sanctuary to witness the largest insect migration in the
world. From Turkey to Vietnam, Jordan to Japan, Cambodia to Ecuador, our intrepid
host travels from continent to continent in search of the WOW factor.

“We took the series to a whole new level this year with the use of smaller format HD
cameras”, says Executive Producer Donna Leon. “That gave us more flexibility, and
season three is packed with lots of wonderful content.”

A WORLD OF WONDERS has been nominated for a 2009 Gemini Award for Best
Original Music for a Lifestyle/Practical Information or Reality Program or Series. It
was also nominated earlier this year for an Alliance for Children and Television Award of
Excellence. The series has been sold to broadcasters in Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros,
Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE and Yemen.

A WORLD OF WONDERS is produced in association with TVOntario, SCN and the
Canadian Museum of Civilization, with financial support from the Canadian Television
Fund and the Shaw Rocket Fund. The series’ new and exciting online game,
Globequest, launches this fall via tvokids.com. It was created in association with award-
winning zinc roe design of Toronto and is supported by the Canada New Media Fund.

Genuine Pictures Inc. is an award-winning independent production company based in Ottawa,
Ontario. The company’s projects range from children’s programming to comedy and drama to
documentaries. GPI has produced more than 300 episodes of television for Canadian networks
and specialty channel broadcasters, including the Gemini nominated programs Reluctant Hero:

Paris 1919

Library and Archives Canada and the National Film Board of Canada

Bibliothèque et Archives Canada et l’Office national du film du Canada
présentent la première à Ottawa du film Paris 1919

PARIS 1919

Written, directed and photographed by Paul Cowan
Scénario, réalisation et image de Paul Cowan

For six fateful months in 1919, Paris was the centre of the world, as presidents, prime ministers and emirs descended on the city to broker peace “for all time” after the most devastating war in history. Inspired by Margaret MacMillan’s masterful work of popular history, director Paul Cowan’s docudrama PARIS 1919 revisits the event with a vivid sense of narrative and reflects upon one of the great missed opportunities of history.

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS IN THE SERIES

FEB. 28 MALCOLM HAMILTON
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

TV Documentary series director/producer turned “one-man-band” delivers a full day of activities around the solo doc maker and operator: “This day-long course is about video/documentary production that's done on a small scale: call it video production for the New Economy, if you want. Forget large budgets and multi-person crews instead, think stripped-down, lean and efficient. This is all about how to plan/shoot/direct and edit documentaries and corporate videos (more for DVD and web distribution than broadcast), by oneself.”

MARCH 14 MAGNUS ISACSSON
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

Veteran director of documentaries that take on social and political issues, Isacsson will guide workshop participants by way of his own work through the minefield of his specialty: the socially and politically committed film. “If you want to express a point of view, support a cause, or make people think about a certain subject, what are the main issues? Notions of objectivity, truth, point of view. Do you do it didactically or through storytelling ? How do you work with the points of view and objectives of your characters as opposed to ( or in conjunction with) your own? What are the potential strengths and pitfalls of point-of-view filmmaking?

MARCH 28 ROBERT and BRENDA ROONEY
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

This workshop is for DIY filmmakers who want to take charge of their own marketing and distribution. Gatineau-based filmmakers Robert and Brenda Rooney make international documentaries which “explore the theme of building bridges between people who face profound life challenges.” The Rooneys will workshop Great Granny
Revolution, “an uplifting story about the Wakefield Grannies, 12 Canadian women, who offer moral and financial support to a group of Gogos (grandmothers), raising AIDS-orphaned grandchildren, in South Africa’s Alexandra Township.” This workshop explores the 4-walling and marketing strategy behind Granny. Workshop participants will work in groups to produce their own 4-walling and marketing package on a specific project.

APRIL 11 PETER WINTONICK
Location: Woodroffe Campus Room N-102
Time: TBA

Canadian documentary maker at large, Peter Wintonick will guide workshop participants through the making of pilgrimage: “A father, Peter Wintonick, and his 19-year-old daughter, Mira, both filmmakers, take a cinematic road trip around the world. They trek through the present and future of film and image-making, using significant contemporary and historical cinematic sites and personal encounters as their points of departure. pilgrIMAGE is a trans-generational, cine-genetic meditation on media and its personal and social consequences. From a renowned documentarian of cinema’s Generation Why? to those of the next-wave era of Generation D (as in digital).”
